Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to reduce a tree?
Depending on the species of tree and age, the time of year can change, but as a rule there are two times of year to be avoided for deciduous trees. These are times when the tree is using the most energy.
- The first is in the spring around the time of bud burst when the tree is putting all its energy into producing new leaves or foliage.
- The second is when the tree is abscising or shedding its leaves, because the barriers that the tree needs to form against infection again require a large amount of energy.
What about subsidence or effects of trees on man-made structures?
This is a very complex issue which can rely on large number of variables. Trees can have the some of the largest effects on shrinkable clay soil where high water demanding trees can shrink the soil, leading to subsidence. Follow this link for some good illustrations and more information.
The opposite is also true where is planted to close to a structure can lift and distort it. This is quite often witnessed when trees grow to close to walls and eventually push them over.
What type of tree should I plant?
This is completely dependent on site and situation and what you would like to achieve from the tree in the future. Some of the issues you may have to consider would be:
- the mature height of the tree
- does it have to be shade tolerant
- the water demand of the tree
- pollution tolerance
- proximity to buildings
- the maintenance requirements of the tree.
Please contact Lloyds Tree Services. We can then advise you on the best type of tree of shrub for your situation.
What health and safety precautions are put in place when undertaking what is a seriously dangerous job?
All the staff who work for or with Lloyd’s Tree Services have been fully trained and have passed NPTC or equivalent certificates of competence in the jobs they are being asked to undertake. This means that you can have peace of mind knowing that job is being done by qualified professionals.
Lloyd’s Tree Services also carries 5 million pounds’ worth of Public Liability Insurance as well 10 million pounds’ worth of Employers Liability Insurance. Employers liability insurance is especially important because the client could otherwise be liable if an accident happens on their property and the employer is not deemed worth pursuing by the defendant.
What about fungi ?
There are many different types of fungi which can have a large number of different effects on trees. Some only act on dead wood, others can compromise the structural integrity of the whole tree.
One such fungus is meripilus giganteus which affects the root plate of trees, such as Beech. It is a particularly worrying fungus because what looks like a perfectly healthy tree could fall over with no warning. If you see any fungi or fruiting bodies on your trees and are worried by the tree, I would advise contacting Lloyds Tree Services so that the risk can be assessed.
What happens to the wood from the tree?
The smaller diameter wood, i.e. anything up six or seven inches is chipped up. Wood chip can be very useful around the garden.
The larger wood is generally cut into man movable sections or can be cut up for firewood. If not required then it is stacked on the truck to be removed from site.
What happens to the tree stump?
Depending on the type of tree it may be necessary to treat the stump in order to prevent suckers growing up from the remaining roots. The stump can then be left to rot away naturally or the main root bowl can be ground out using a stump cutter to a depth of around 250 to 300 mm below the ground surface. This might not be advisable in areas where there are known to be underground services.
How much does it cost to have tree work done?
This is again a question that is very much dependent on the individual situation and the amount of time it will take Lloyds Tree Services operatives to complete the job in a safe, efficient manner. For example if the job requires the use of lowering devices this might take longer than if the tree were in an open grassy area with no obstacles to be avoided.
Contact us with some details of what you want done – once we have seen the job we will be able to give you an estimate.
